In a bizarre PR move, the club’s official Twitter account posted about Depay’s first goal for Netherlands in their World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg on Sunday.
For certain Toffee fans, the tweet reaffirmed existing rumours that the out-of-favour Dutchman is on his way to Everton.
Indeed, manager Ronald Koeman has already confirmed that the club is interested in the 22-year-old.
"I would love to have him in my team at Everton," Koeman told Fox Sports.
"He is a very interesting player in my opinion. He has a lot of individual quality, is always dangerous going forward and is pretty efficient as well."
Depay has been pushed to the periphery of the United squad under manager Jose Mourinho and is reportedly growing unsettled at Old Trafford.
Speaking ahead of United's Europa League clash in Turkey earlier in November, Fenerbahce coach and fellow Dutchman Dick Advocaat suggested Depay should change clubs.
Advocaat said: "Maybe he has to find another solution because he is too good to sit on the bench. I still believe in him, he has the right mentality, the right character to play for United.
"But there are so many options there. Regular playing time will help his progression."
Depay, who cost United £25m from PSV Eindhoven in May 2015, is under contract until 2019.
But with the Toffee’s expected to lose Romelu Lukaku next summer, Depay could make an ideal replacement to fill the Belgian’s shoes.
