Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is being linked with a big-money move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani - with Angel Di Maria a possible makeweight in the deal.

According to a report in the Guardian, Van Gaal has made the 28-year-old Uruguayan his 'No 1 choice' to arrive at Old Trafford this summer and fill the void that will be left by the impending departure of Robin van Persie, who arrived in Turkey on Sunday night to complete a deal to Fenerbahce.

That leaves Wayne Rooney as the only senior striker in the squad, with Javier Hernandez, who spent last season on loan at Real Madrid, not likely to come into Van Gaal's plans next season.

With PSG manager Laurent Blanc admitting that the French club are still interested in Di Maria, who almost joined them last summer, the Argentinian has been mentioned in a possible swap deal - perhaps on loan, according to the Manchester Evening News.

United are expecting a busy day on Monday before they fly to the US for their pre-season tour.

Moves for Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin are on the brink of being completed, while David De Gea may yet move to Real Madrid after the Spanish club confirmed that Iker Casillas will leave the club.

Cavani, who has been linked with a move to the Premier League for some time, has never fully settled in Paris.

He has been successful following his €64million (£45m approx) from Napoli, winning Ligue 1 in both his seasons in France.

Despite scoring 56 goals in 96 matches in all competitions for the club there have been constant rumours that Cavani has been unhappy at playing out on the left wing and second fiddle to main man Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
