Dimitar Berbatov is reportedly on the verge of finalising a deal with Aston Villa.

The 34-year-old, formerly of Manchester United, has been regularly linked with a move to Villa Park over the last few years and is currently a free agent after leaving Monaco at the end of last season.

According to reports by The Express, Berbatov has arrived in Birmingham to strike a deal with Tim Sherwood ahead of today's transfer deadline.

Former Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov, who is a compatriot of Berbatov, has spoke of the club's interest in the Bulgarian.

Berbatov has also previously said he would welcome a move back to the Premier League. His name has also recently been linked to Bournemouth and West Ham United. However, given the approaching deadline, a move to Villa now seems the likeliest.

Any return would mark the striker's fourth stint at a Premier League club, following spells with in the capital with Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, as well as his time in Manchester.

Villa are also expected to complete the signing of Joleon Lescott from West Bromwich Albion, having agreed a £2m fee.
