The Spain international is being mooted as the long-term successor to Iker Casillas, who Real Madrid are ready to phase out of the club following a couple of years of declining form.
De Gea has matured into one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League following a somewhat uncertain start at Old Trafford following his switch from Atletico Madrid.
That the 23-year-old's current contract has entered into its penultimate year has fuelled the talk and hasn't gone unnoticed by Real Madrid, however speaking to Kicker, De Gea made his stance clear when asked about the speculation.
"[They are] Just rumours. I'm happy here.”
Manchester United play Chelsea this weekend in the biggest test of Louis van Gaal's Manchester United tenure. Despite a difficult start, United are sixth in the league, however they are 10 points adrift of the league leaders, meaning defeat on Sunday would almost certainly rule out any chances of winning the title. De Gea says United must at least end the season in the top four.
"Starting problems are quite normal under a new coach with a complete new concept,” he said.
“That's a process and Van Gaal always says that we will improve, but it takes time. But without a doubt, United have to reach the Champions League again."
