23-year-old De Gea has been in fine form despite the troubles that the United defence are experiencing in front of him. Real are believed to be interested in the services of De Gea as the successor to long-serving captain Iker Casillas, although the decision taken by Vicente del Bosque to drop Casillas in favour of De Gea for Sunday’s 4-0 win over Luxembourg appears to show that a change is on the cards sooner rather than later.
United are keen to tie down De Gea to a long-term contract, but his recent performance against Everton – which featured two match-winning saves late in the game – has once again highlighted his potential to become one of the leading goalkeepers in the game.
De Gea’s current deal runs out in the summer of 2016, and having joined the club in 2011 for a hefty £17.8m fee from Atletico Madrid, he has gone on to solidify his standing as the first choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford.
He did experience a nervy start to life in the Premier League as he struggled to impose himself around his area and on opposition strikers. However, he enjoyed a much improved campaign last season that saw him named the club’s Player of the Year, and United are determined to keep him out of the clutches of Real despite links with a £30m offer in the pipeline.
United manager Louis van Gaal is keen to add another goalkeeper to provide competition and back-up for De Gea, with the expectation that current No 2 Anders Lindegaard will seek a move in the search for regular first team football.
However, United’ attentions have been elsewhere as they mounted a complete revamp of the squad in the summer with the likes of Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Daley Blind coming into the side, with no fewer than 14 players heading out the door this summer.
