The 28-year-old striker, who had also attracted interest from Newcastle United, Sevilla and Internazionale, has left Anfield on a temporary basis in search of regular first-team football.
Sturridge is eager to play his way into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the forthcoming World Cup but has found his playing time limited under Jürgen Klopp this season.
Newcastle emerged as a potential destination for Sturridge on Monday when the north-east club made initial contact with Liverpool over a potential loan deal.
However, the Birmingham-born striker has moved back to his native west Midlands in the hope of more minutes at the Hawthorns.
Alan Pardew, the West Bromwich manager, has made no secret of his desire to bring a new striker before Wednesday’s transfer deadline recently as he battles to lift the Baggies out of the Premier League relegation zone.
Pardew, however, remained coy when asked about Sturridge at the weekend, following his side’s surprise 3-2 FA Cup fourth round win at Anfield.
“I think he is a great player but I don’t know what his situation is at the moment,” he said. Sturridge will be able to play for West Bromwich in the remainder of their FA Cup campaign after being left out of Liverpool’s matchday squad on Saturday.
The striker, who had fallen behind both Roberto Firmino and Dominic Solanke in the Anfield pecking order, is unlikely to be replaced by Klopp before the end of the current transfer window.
Ahead of his side’s trip to Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night, Klopp also ruled out an immediate replacement for Philippe Coutinho, who left Anfield for Barcelona in a £142m deal earlier this month.
“Phil Coutinho is not to replace in this transfer window,” he said on Monday. “We can stop thinking about it. It is not about replacing anyone; it is about using our own opportunities, our own tools, players, tactics and formations.
“Unfortunately, in the moment when Phil left, Adam Lallana got an injury and that was unlucky but that cannot be the reason for getting nervous and going out to try do something.
“In the long term we will do a lot [in the transfer market]. In the short term I don’t think a lot will happen.”
