The Daily Star report that Chelsea are, astonishingly, hoping to take the centre-back on loan from their forthcoming Champions League knockout-stage opponents Paris Saint-Germain.
The Brazilian is not the long-term replacement for John Terry that the club want, but the 31-year-old's exeprience is seen as vital if they are to negotiate the season's last few months. File that one in 'unlikely'.
Antoine Griezmann’s name continues to be linked with west London and Atletico Madird manager Diego Simeone has now admitted that he will not keep the France international at the club against his will.
"The sporting directors have been speaking to him directly, with those close to him, in order to work out what's best for him and the club," he revealed.
"Of course he's a very important player for us, but we can't hold him here with chains."
Alex Teixeira’s been causing quite the kerfuffle over the last few days and, although Liverpool have been attempting to finalise a deal for the prolific forward, Chelsea retain a keen interest.
The Shakthar Donetsk player has now admitted he wants to leave Ukraine, and sees England as the perfect destination.
Speaking to Brazilian newspaper Globo, he said: “I would like to move in this transfer window and have told them [Shakhtar] that.
“They have received a very good offer and they are working on a solution. But if I don’t go now then I will leave in the summer.
“After six years in Europe and with Shakhtar we are ready to move and I have spoken to my wife and daughter. It is my desire to move to a big league and I know that the English league is very strong.”
Radamel Falcao’s chances of a permanent move, meanwhile, may be diminishing by the day but thanks to website Football Leaks, the whole world now knows what it will take to keep him on Chelsea’s books.
The Blues have an option to sign the striker for the princely sum of £38million, which doesn’t seem such a great deal, even before you factor in the injury-plagued Colombian’s single goal from 13 appearances this season.
Finally, and onto managerial affairs, former players Didier Deschamps and Mark Hughes have both been linked with the hot seat.
Deschamps, currently the head coach of France’s national team, would introduce a “long-term strategy” at Stamford Bridge.
Hughes’ work at Stoke City has also impressed club officials, according to the Mirror, and seen him emerge as a surprise candidate.
