Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho could be set to make a stunning move for Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, reports suggest.

With incoming Blues boss Antonio Conte expected to overhaul the Chelsea squad on his arrival, Fabregas’ place at Stamford Bridge now appears to be in jeopardy.

Conte has been linked with a number of highly-coveted midfielders, including Leicester City’s N’Golo Kante and Portugal star Joao Mario, which could threaten Fabregas’ position in the side were these players to sign.

According to the Daily Mirror, the United boss is biding his time to see if his former player becomes surplus to Conte’s requirements before launching a bid for the midfielder.

Mourinho still has a good relationship with the 29-year-old, who joined Chelsea two years ago, which will undoubtedly play in the manager’s favour.

But Fabgreas struggled to impress under the Mourinho last season as Chelsea slumped to 10th place in the league.

Mourinho: I am where I want to be

His five goals and seven assists reflected the Blues’ poor form which saw them fail to retain their Premier League title and miss out on European football.

It was a completely different story the season before as the Spanish midfielder flourished at Stamford Bridge. He made 18 assists in the league to lead Chelsea to their first title since the 2009/10 season.

Fabregas is yet another name to be linked to Old Trafford as United continue to chase down Paul Pogba.

The club have already brought in Villarreal defender Eric Bailly, out-of-contract striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund.

With Juan Mata expected to be moved on from Manchester, it’s likely Fabregas could fill his spot were the Spaniard actually to sign for Mourinho.
