Chelsea are contemplating surprise summer moves for Atletico Madrid's centre-back Diego Godín and West Ham striker Enner Valencia.

Despite holding a commanding position at the top of the Premier League table, Jose Mourinho is already preparing to add to his squad for next season and has identified his defence and forward line as areas which need strengthening.

Godín, who scored in last year’s Uefa Champions League final, is rated as one of the continent’s best centre-backs and would be a viable alternative to Chelsea’s main target, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.

The Daily Mail reports that Godín is interesting officials at Stamford Bridge, and a summer transfer bid could be in the offing should the Blues decide to press forward with their interest.

A move could be made if the Blues trigger the £28.5million release clause in the Uruguayan’s contract.

With Diego Costa’s on-going injury troubles, Mourinho is also searching for cover up front and according to The Mirror, Valencia is believed to be one of several strikers that he is monitoring.

The Ecuadorian arrived at the Boleyn Ground on a five-year deal last year. He has scored 5 goals in 31 appearances this season and has only found the net twice since November, although the £12m-rated forward has often found himself playing out on the wing.
