Sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claim that the Reds could make a move for the Chilean midfielder with the Champions League finalists interested in Roma's Radja Nainggolan.
To fund a move for the Belgian, Juventus will have to sell and 27-year-old Vidal will likely raise a large fee.
The news will not be welcomed at Old Trafford with Manchester United known admirers of Vidal, having chased him for the last couple of seasons.
Last summer, Vidal to United was an almost constant source of speculation, with Van Gaal apparently only turned off because of lingering doubts over his knee.
But Vidal has again been excellent for the Old Lady this season, scoring eight goals this season with Max Allegri's side chasing the treble.
