Arsenal are preparing a £20m bid for William Carvalho in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Gunner are ready to return to Sporting Lisbon with the offer having failed to land the holding midfielder in the summer.

Talks between Arsenal and the Portuguese side were held again in the Autumn but broke down.

It's reported that Arsene Wenger has renewed hope of landing the 22-year-old Portugal international due to Sporting Lisbon's elimination from the Champions League at the group stage. The lack of top-tier European football in the second-half of the season could see Sporting open up to serious negotiation.

Arsenal have appeared in dire need of more defensively minded players this season and Carvalho would fit the bill.
