Arsenal’s busy ending to the summer transfer window may still have a twist in the tail after reports emerged claiming that the Gunners are eyeing a move for Paraguay international midfielder Miguel Almiron.

With Jack Wilshere heading for a temporary exit after asking Arsene Wenger for a loan move in order to secure regular first-team football, a new arrival could yet arrive in the form of 22-year-old Almiron. Arsenal are already poised to sign two new players in defender Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez before Wednesday’s transfer deadline, but a third is not being ruled out of the equation.

The Sun claims that Arsenal have been monitoring Almiron throughout the summer and with Argentine league champions Lanus valuing him at around £11m, he would be well within Arsenal’s budget despite Wenger edging the £100m barrier this summer.

With Almiron able to play in a wide attacking role as well as in the centre of midfield, he would offer a similar versatility than to that of Wilshere, and a short-term deal would give Wenger to chance to cover Wilshere’s absence while take a closer look at Almiron to see if he has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

Having made his Paraguay debut during this summer’s Copa America, Almiron has just the sole international cap to his name, having represented both the under-17s and the under-20s during his youth career.

Wenger’s comments last week suggested though that Mustafi and Perez will be his final additions to the squad ahead of Wednesday night’s deadline, although his admission came before Wilshere missed out on the England squad and subsequently requested a move away from the Emirates.

"We had to work very hard to get the signings done,” he said of the deals to sign Mustafi and Perez. “We have not got any plans for anyone else now.”

One the £35m and £17m deals for Mustafi and Perez respectively are announced, Arsenal’s spending will have surged to just shy of £90m, and a move for Almiron would take the north London club’s spending during one transfer window beyond the £100m mark for the first time in their history, with Wenger’s £80m spending spree in 2014 the previous mark for their most expensive window.
