Arsene Wenger wants to make Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas Arsenal’s new number one stopper and is eyeing a quick deal for the 33-year-old, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

Lukas Fabianski left the Gunners after their FA Cup triumph in May meaning there is now a gap for a new goalkeeper to come in and, with Wojciech Szczesny not always as reliable as desired, Casillas could cement a starting role.

Casillas is a World and European Cup champion with Spain and lifted Real’s 10th Champions League trophy at the end of last season but has had relationship problems within the club in recent years.

The ‘keeper fell out with then Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho throughout his time in charge at the Bernabeu, meaning Casillas was left on the bench.

When Carlo Ancelotti took over as Real boss in 2013, Casillas’ problems remained and he was only used for cups games with Diego Lopez playing the majority of La Liga fixtures.

It is now believed that Casillas is ready for a move away from Spain and Wenger is keen on completing a relatively hassle free deal for him and could call upon his current players to help persuade him to switch.

Santi Cazorla played with Casillas for the Spanish nation side and ex Real teammate Mesut Ozil could help bring him to the Emirates.

Casillas has spent his entire career with Real to date, playing close to 700 games in total. He also has 153 Spain caps to his name, a total he is likely to add to considerably at this summer’s World Cup.

It is also being reported that Wenger is looking at St Etienne's Stephane Ruffier and Malaga’s Willy Caballero to fill the goalkeeper void.
