Arsene Wenger has insisted he wants to keep striker Olivier Giroud at Arsenal and will resist any approach from Marseille.

Reports surfaced on Monday suggesting the Ligue 1 side were willing to pay £20m for the 30-year-old after making him their top transfer target this summer.

Alexis Sanchez has been Wenger’s first-choice striker this season despite Giroud scoring 13 times for the Gunners in all competitions.

However, after only 14 starts this season and a squad overhaul expected in the summer, Marseille believed they could coax the Frenchman back across the Channel.

But Wenger insisted Giroud was still wanted at the Emirates and would not be following Dimitri Payet’s January move from London to Marseille.

Speaking on Tuesday morning, he said: “I have had no approach from Marseille and we want to keep Olivier Giroud at the club.

“I am looking at transfer targets for next season, I work until the last day of the season for the present and the future.”
