Sami Khedira's Real Madrid future was cast into further doubt last night when the World Cup winner failed to even make the bench for the Spanish Super Cup tie against Atletico Madrid.

The Germany international has been linked with a switch away from the Bernabeu ever since lifting the World Cup in Brazil earlier this summer, with Arsenal considered his most likely destination.

The 27-year-old has also been linked with moves to Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Reports have suggested Real Madrid are keen to cash in on Khedira rather than see the midfielder leave for free when his contract expires next summer. A stumbling block to any proposed switch is the exorbitant wage demands the former Stuttgart player will reportedly command.

However, indications that his future lies away from Real Madrid were confirmed last night with his omission from the match-day squad for the first-leg of the Spanish Super Cup, which ended 1-1 at the Bernabeu.

The Germany international was not used in the recent Uefa Super Cup win over Sevilla either, however Khedira is available to Carlo Ancelotti, having started in a friendly against Fiorentina at the weekend.
