Olivier Giroud reveals the chance of trophies was the reason why he left Arsenal for Chelsea

Olivier Giroud has revealed that he joined Chelsea from Arsenal because of their track record of winning major trophies.

The Frenchman joined Chelsea as part of a deadline-day pass-the-striker as he replaced Michy Batshuayi, who in turn filled the void left by Arsenal’s new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Giroud joined for a total £18m on an 18-month deal as he searched for more first-team opportunities ahead of this summer’s World Cup with France.

However, despite winning three FA Cups during his six-year spell in north London, he said the number that Chelsea have won in the last decade was the biggest factor in him moving to Stamford Bridge.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest teams in the Premier League,” Giroud said. “They have won maybe the most trophies in the last six or seven years. It’s a massive club and I am proud to sign for Chelsea, and I’m looking forward to playing.”

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia, who was present when Giroud signed his 18-month deal added: “Olivier is a proven talent at the top level and we are very pleased to call him a Chelsea player.

“He has scored goals regularly throughout his career and is well accustomed to English football and the Premier League. We are sure he will be a fantastic signing.”
