From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. As the rumour mills finally came to an end after a summer of non-stop gossip churning, Premier League clubs had spent a new record of £835m over the course of the transfer window.

On Monday itself, clubs in the top tier spent £85m.

Clearly the biggest news of deadline day was the introduction of Radamel Falcao at Manchester United on a season-long loan deal worth around £20m. Falcao said last night that playing for “one of the truly great teams” like Manchester United was a lifetime’s ambition.

Meanwhile, Arsenal poached out-of-favour United striker Danny Welbeck on an apparent five-year deal for £17m. Another United striker leaving the club in the wake of Falcao's arrival was Javier Hernandez, who joined Real Madrid on loan.

United also added Daley Blind to their ranks for £14m on a four-year deal from Ajax. In total, new United manager Louis van Gaal spent just over £150m in the transfer window.

Elsewhere, Manchester City offloaded Alvaro Negredo and Micah Richards, with the pair going on loan to Valencia and Fiorentina respectively.

Hull City were the busiest Premier league club on deadline day, with Steve Bruce signing four players: Palermo’s Abel Hernandez for a club record £10m, Hatem Ben Arfa, Gaston Ramirez and Mo Diame.
