Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Hull City midfielder Tom Huddlestone has sold his famous lock of hair, cut off to mark his first goal for thirty-two months, for £6,300 on internet auctioning website eBay.
To many it's only a few strands of hair but to one lucky Hull fan, it's a momento of the Tigers' biggest ever Premier League victory - the 6-0 dismantling of René Meulensteen's Fulham on Boxing Day.
In the 67th minute, with his 39th shot of the season, Huddlestone's wait was finally over as he watched the ball fizz past David Stockdale and into the visitors' net.
Marking the auspicious milestone with sufficient pomp and ceremony, Huddlestone then ensured that the famous afro - trimmed by club physio Rob Price on the sidelines - would live on in the minds of all at the KC Stadium with a memorable goal celebration.
Put up for sale on the club's official eBay page on 30th December, bidding soon jumped from £9.99 into quadruple figures overnight.
The item - listed with the caption "Fluffy. One previous owner" - attracted 114 unique bids and was sold for £6,300 last night.
After scoring in Tottenham Hotspur's 3-3 draw with Arsenal in April 2011, the 27-year-old was challenged not to cut his hair until his next success in front of goal.
Not even Huddlestone, more modest than most about his scoring exploits, will have thought that it would take almost three years for that dare to be won.
The former England international, whose form for Steve Bruce's side has put him firmly back in contention for a call-up, has raised over £50,000 towards his 'Huddlefro' campaign for Cancer Research UK.
The winning bidder, whose identity is unknown at present, will be presented with the lock of hair at the club's training ground in East Yorkshire and get the opportunity to meet the midfielder in person.
“I had always thought about the celebration," Huddlestone told The Independent this evening.
"It was about 18 months ago at Spurs that we all decided I’d get the scissors on it. I didn’t expect it to take so long to actually happen though!
"When we planned the celebration, we all thought it would be a good laugh, but I’m not sure anybody spoke about what would happen to the piece of hair.
"Thankfully the club picked it up on the day, and put it online for auction.
"It’s raised an amazing amount of money, more than I could have imagined, and the generosity from everybody involved has been incredible.
"I’d like to thank everybody for donating as much as they have done, and watching the total amount rise, particularly since the final whistle against Fulham, has meant a great deal to me."
