Celebrities and former players lined up in the annual Soccer Aid charity match on Sunday as an England side fell to a Rest of the World outfit on penalties.
The game, which raised more funds for Unicef than any previous edition of the event, saw former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney managing the England team while the Rest of the World were coached by Harry Redknapp.
Former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane opened the scoring early in the second half after a drab opening period, but England immediately fired back through comedian Yung Filly. A penalty shootout ensued, with musician Chunkz missing the decisive spot-kick as Rest of the World lifted the Soccer Aid trophy. Re-live all the updates below:
75 mins: Heskey clatters into Keane and gives away a free kick in the middle of the pitch. Santan Dave receives the ball in the box but isn’t able to maneuver it into enough space to take a shot.
The World XI attack again and Evra’s shot goes wide.
78 mins: Roman Kemp has replaced Jason Manford for the World XI. John Terry crosses the ball into the box and Emile Heskey wins a corner. Joe Cole takes it but the ball is headed back out to him. His second cross into the box results in another corner. The ball comes into the box and Olly Murs is penalised. Free kick to the World XI.
81 mins: Andy Cole is on for England now. He partners Heskey up front. Robbie Keane crosses a ball into the far post and Roman Kemp meets it with a soft touch that Alfie Allen collects.
84 mins: The game is heading toward penalties, but we’ve got time left yet for someone to score a winner. Mark Wright crosses the ball into the box and Andy Cole wins the header but he puts it wide!
87 mins: Marvin Humes tackles Jeremy Lynch as he comes into the box from the left wing and Humes wins a goal kick for England.
89 mins: Robbie Keane collects a great ball over the top from Jason Manford and squares it into the box. Jeremy Lynch makes a good run but isn’t able to meet the pass.
A reminder, only celebrities will take the penalties. In the history of Soccer Aid matches, we’ve had penalties three times. World XI have won twice and England once. This time last year, the World XI were victorious but who will triumph this time?
Alfie Allen and Ore Oduba will be the goalkeepers for the shootout. Allen takes his position between the sticks. World XI up first.
