Soccer Aid result: Rest of the World beat England on penalties in charity game at Old Trafford

3 mins: England seeing most of the ball in the opening few minutes but John Bishop gives away a free kick 30 yards or so away from goal. Michael Essien takes the set piece for the World XI and smokes it way over the goal. 

6 mins: Gareth Barry takes a quick free kick for England and tries to pick out Kelly Smith who makes a run into the box. The pass is too heavy, goes over her head and Shay Given collects the ball for the World XI. 

Smith has started well for England. She plays a beauty of a pass to send Danny Jones in behind the defence but Jones’ first touch is poor and he loses the ball.

8 mins: On commentary Chris Stark and Clive Tyldesley are discussing Mark Clattenburg’s Champions League tattoo. Chris asks Clive whether he has any tattoos. “I’m not a great fan of pain to be honest.” was the response. Brilliant.

12 mins: World XI playing themselves into the game now. Lianne Sanderson finds Jeremy Lynch in the box but he is tackled and the attack breaks down. 

15 mins: Big Tom Davis is the first player to make way. It’s been an intense quarter of an hour and the big man may have picked up an injury. Chunkz, the YouTuber, comes on to replace him. 

18 mins: Chelcee Grimes is almost in for the World XI. She makes a darting run into the box and Lianne Sanderson slots the ball into the penalty area for her. David James spies the threat and sprints off his line, getting to the ball quickly and denying Grimes the chance to shoot. 

21 mins: Sanderson goes for goal herself this time, but doesn’t connect well and David James makes a regulation save. 

That’s the best chance of the half! Patrice Evra brings the ball forward as Jeremy Lynch sneaks past John Bishop and runs into the box. Evra picks him out and Lynch is only denied by a last ditch block from Wes Brown!

25 mins: After a quick drinks break, the World XI take their corner. Serge Pizzorno whips it in. Dermot Kennedy misses a chance to win a header but the ball falls to him anyway. His shot is blocked and it bounces away to Sanderson. She has a go and is denied, England are scrambling at the back but Mark Wright recovers to clear the ball away.

Yung Filly makes an appearance for England, coming on as a striker replacing Danny Jones up top. Dermot Kennedy passes the ball out wide to Evra who brings it into the box. Evra looks for a cross but instead shoots… David James dives to his left and pushes the ball past the near post! Good chance for the World XI who look the most likely team to score.

32 mins: Evra, playing at left-back tonight, welcomes Filly into the match with a little nudge over by the left side corner flag. Mark Wright delivers the resultant free kick into the box but it’s easily defended by the World XI.
