The former Sunderland, Leicester City and Wigan Athletic forward hit a hat-trick in the 5-1 win over Cowdenbeath that booked the Glasgow side’s place in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup. His goals took the 25-year-old past Peterhead’s Rory McAllister as he became Britain’s top scorer in all competitions.
However, Warburton reckons the Ibrox faithful have yet to see the best of their ace marksman. “The more often he plays, the greater his belief in his ability and he’ll get better and better,” the manager said. “He’s on 25 goals in early January and he will get stronger and stronger.
“Martyn’s target was to play football and, basic as it may sound, to play week in and out. He is a victim of his own success – at 19, he got his £3m move to Leicester and spent time on the bench in the Premier League, but he needed to play. He’s doing that now, developing nicely and there’s a lot more to come.”
Carlton Cole headed home his first goal for Celtic in his first start for the club since signing in October in the 3-0 fourth-round win over the League One side Stranraer at Stair Park. Leigh Griffiths scored twice.
However, manager Ronny Deila has issued a warning to the club’s fans about endangering safety and Celtic’s reputation after smoke bombs were thrown.
Celtic have a Uefa charge pending after fans set off flares in their Europa League fixture against Fenerbahce in Turkey in December and the Norwegian said: “We don’t want this. It’s something that is making a bad reputation for the club.”
