Rangers have appointed Steven Gerrard as the club’s new manager on a four-year contract. It is the former Liverpool captain’s first managerial role, succeeding Graeme Murty who was fired by the Glasgow club on Tuesday.

“I am honoured to become the next manager of Rangers,” Gerrard said. ”I have enormous respect for this football club, and its history and tradition. I can’t wait to start this new journey at Rangers as we look to build on the many successes that this club has achieved.”

Gerrard’s backroom staff have yet to be confirmed but it is understood the former Liverpool player and coach Gary McAllister will become part of his team at Ibrox.

Gerrard had been working for his former club, serving as the U18s’ manager since last summer. The 37-year-old has also been working in the media, as a key component of BT Sport’s Champions League coverage.

The outgoing Murty only took over in October after Pedro Caixinha’s sacking in October. Though his contract only ran until the end of the season, Murty had made his desire to stay on beyond the summer clear, but chairman Dave King hinted at the club’s intention to hire a new manager after the 4-0 semi-final loss to Celtic in the Scottish Cup in April. Assistants Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson were installed to take charge until the end of the season.

The Rangers chairman Dave King said: “We are delighted to confirm today that Steven Gerrard will become the next manager of Rangers. From the very beginning, talks have been extremely positive and we believe that Steven is the right man to drive Rangers forward.

“He was extremely impressive throughout our negotiations and we are convinced that he has the necessary knowledge and temperament to lead the Club to the success we all desire. This a special day for our club, our fans and for Steven.”
