Kennedy rewarded for Celtic role with Scotland call-up
John Kennedy, the young Celtic defender, has been called up to the Scotland squad for the friendly with Romania at Hampden Park on Wednesday. The captain of the Under-21 side has been promoted by Berti Vogts, the Scotland coach, following his assured displays against Barcelona and Rangers last week.
The 20-year-old joins team-mates Jackie McNamara, Robert Douglas and Stephen Pearson in the squad, with the Celtic manager, Martin O'Neill, saying he does not expect him to be a "one-cap wonder".
"He has played at right-back, left-back and at centre-half and he has adjusted accordingly to who's alongside him," O'Neill said.
"He deserves to be in the side, but whether somebody plays international football or not it is really not my call," he added. "I know sometimes players go in and are one-cap wonders, but I don't think John Kennedy is of that making. The last few months he has proved himself to be a good young player."
