East Fife have described a section of their own supporters as "deplorable, rude and sexist" and say they had brought "embarrassment" on the club following chants aimed at the female physiotherapist of their opponents at the weekend.

During the 1-0 defeat to East Stirlingshire in The Ladbrokes League Two on Saturday, some of the travelling support at Ochilview targeted the physiotherapist.

East Fife today publicly apologised in a strongly worded statement.

"The behaviour of a number of East Fife fans was deplorable and an embarrassment to East Fife FC," read the statement on the club's website.

"The chanting and singing by that group of supporters was disgusting, rude and sexist."

The Scottish club said they would be apologising to the club and the medic at whom the chants, which was allegedly of a sexual nature, were targeted.

"The fans who acted in such a disgusting manner should consider whether they wish to return to Bayview in future as the club cannot be expected to tolerate this behaviour again," they said.

"The abuse the stewards and match officials were given during and after the match was also considered unacceptable.

"We are a family club with ladies and child supporters, as are East Stirlingshire FC. They should not have been exposed to this type of language and behaviour."
