Black in charge at Motherwell
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Motherwell have appointed Eric Black as their new manager, with the former England international Terry Butcher named as his assistant.
Black, the former Aberdeen and Metz striker, succeeds Billy Davies, who left the club last month after a poor start to the season. Motherwell currently lie second from bottom of the Scottish Premier League, six points ahead of St Johnstone.
Black, an assistant to the Slovak, Josef Venglos, at Celtic during the 1998-99 season, is taking on his first job as manager, while Butcher has had brief managerial experience at Coventry City and Sunderland. The pair have signed contracts at Fir Park to take them through to the end of the 2004-05 season.
Dundee have signed the Georgian midfielder Temuri Ketsbaia on a six-month contract. The former Newcastle and Wolverhampton Wanderers player joins Ivano Bonetti's side after falling out of favour at Molineux. The 33-year-old joins his countrymen Georgi Nemsadze and Zura Khizanishvili at Dens Park.
Hearts are aiming to complete a three-month loan deal for the former Crystal Palace striker Ricardo Fuller today. The move is dependent on the granting of a work permit for the Jamaican international but the club believe that he meets the necessary criteria.
Jamaica are 52nd in the Fifa world rankings, five places behind Scotland, and Fuller has played the required percentage of games for his country to qualify for the work permit. Hearts' spokesman Douglas Dalgleish said: "We are ahead of the game on that one and we don't foresee any difficulties. He should be signed in time for Sunday's Edinburgh derby [against Hibernian]."
The deal also means that the Greek Under-21 international Giorgios Vakouftsis will not be joining Hearts on loan. Fiorentina had refused to release the player following an injury to Enrico Chiesa.
The 6ft 2in Fuller, who has been training at Tynecastle for the past week, left Palace in the summer to join the Jamaican club Tivoli Gardens, who have agreed to loan him out.
Hearts' need for a striker was made more urgent by ankle ligament damage to Andy Kirk in Saturday's 3-0 victory over St Johnstone. X-rays have confirmed that Kirk did not break his leg, but the Northern Ireland international is still expected to be out of action for months rather than weeks.
