It appears Wigan Athletic needed this win as much as Victor Moses required his confidence-boosting first Premier League goal of the season. Wigan face a season of struggle; it's something they have become accustomed to now at the DW Stadium. But moving out of the bottom three is one thing, staying out of the dreaded drop zone is something else. That's where match-winner Moses could hold the key.

As one of the most sought-after players in the Championship, Moses, 19, opted to join Wigan in January ahead of a clutch of interested clubs. Ironically, one of those teams he rejected was West Bromwich, and how Roberto Di Matteo must be regretting not pushing the move through after Moses turned this game after coming off the substitutes' bench at half-time in a 1-0 win.

"I knew there was some interest there [from West Bromwich]," he said. "But I just had a feeling about Wigan. This was the club I wanted to join from day one. I know Roberto Di Matteo is a good manager, but it never got to the stage where we had talks or anything because I just felt this was the right move for me. Now it feels like I made the right decision and hopefully we can push on from here now."

With Wigan facing a trip to Manchester United next up, and having shipped 17 goals in their five previous visits to Old Trafford, how Roberto Martinez needed to register a first win in six games here.

"I'd love to start at Old Trafford," added Moses, following his 70th-minute winner. "We know it'll be difficult there, but United haven't been at their best so maybe we could go there and get something."
