Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Premier League's claim that it's the best division in the world can seem overblown, but this weekend it's been difficult to disagree.

Football fans have witnessed some truly memorable goals, from Wayne Rooney's strike on the turn to Charlie Adam's effort from inside his own half. With Saturday's screamers seemingly impossible to top, Jermain Defoe then unleashed one during the Tyne-Wear derby to rival the lot.

But which was the best goal? Check out our short list below and then vote in our poll.

Jermain Defoe

Sunderland vs Newcastle: A long punt forward came off the head of a Sunderland team-mate and dropped to Defoe just outside the box, who then struck the ball on the volley with his left-foot into the top corner.

Bobby Zamora

West Brom vs QPR: Despite there appearing to be little danger as Zamora reached the corner of the penalty box, the QPR striker used the outside of his left boot to get the ball over the head of Boaz Myhill, onto the underside of the bar and in.

Wayne Rooney

Manchester United vs Aston Villa: With a cross seemingly too far behind Rooney for the United captain to make anything of it, he plucked the ball out of the air with his left foot, swivelled and struck the ball with his right foot into the back of the net.

Charlie Adam

Chelsea vs Stoke: Spotting Thibaut Courtois off his line, Adam struck the ball to perfection from inside his own half to beat the Chelsea keeper.

Alexis Sanchez

Arsenal vs Liverpool: After taking on a through-ball and cutting inside with one touch, Sanchez then unleashed a venomous shot that went right through Simon Mignolet.

Olivier Giroud

Arsenal vs Liverpool: Whilst running at pace on goal, rather than use the options around him, Giroud struck the ball from just outside the box and found the corner of Mignolet's net to make it 4-1 to the Gunners.
