The Coventry City striker Whelan had initial medical tests over the weekend and was due to complete themyesterday before clinching a £2m move to Teesside on a four-year contract. The Cameroon international Job, who has been on trial for a fortnight from the French club Lens, was also expected to undergo a medical yesterday with a view to completing a £3m move.

If the deals go through Whelan and Job could make their club debuts in Robbie Mustoe's testimonial game against Borussia Dortmund at the Riverside next Sunday.

The Boro manager, Bryan Robson, is still awaiting a decision from the German international defender Christ-ian Ziege after Liverpool made a £5.5m bid.

Jonatan Johansson completed his £3.75m move from Rangers to Charlton Athletic yesterday. The 24-year-old Finnish international striker, who has signed a five-year deal, scored 24 goals in 75 appearances for Rangers, after joining from the Estonian club FC Flora.

Rangers' Champions' League trip to Lithuania was dealt a blow yesterday when a catering truck crashed into the plane the team were due to be travelling on. The club have managed to organise a new flight before the second qualifying round, second leg against Zalgiris Kaunus and the team will travel as planned today.

Rangers could be set to take advantage of the internal unrest at Real Madrid in their search for a new striker. With the chase for the Schalke 04 striker Emile Mpenza dragging on, Rangers have made an inquiry about Diego Tristan. The Real Mallorca forward had signed a deal with Real Madrid, but that was under the Spanish club's previous chairman, Lorenzo Sanz.

Bradford City are to give a trial to Benfica's Hugo Porfirio, who has previously played in England with both West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

The Nottingham Forest midfielder Nigel Quashie is set to join the club's First Division rivals Portsmouth, whose manager, Tony Pulis, has agreed an a deal for an undisclosed fee. The contract is expected to be finalised within the next 24 hours.

The Birmingham City full-back David Burrows has been ruled out of the start of the new League season with a torn hamstring.
