Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

United dominated possession for long spells but West Brom could have argued they were the better side going forward as they twice led, first through Stephane Sessegnon and then Saido Berahino in the 66th minute.
Marouane Fellaini - a half-time substitute - had cancelled out the first but it was Daley Blind who broke Baggies hearts with his 88th minute strike salvaging a point for Louis van Gaal's side.
"Definitely (disappointed)," Berahino said on Sky Sports 1. "I thought we did really well to get that second goal and it's a shame we could not hold on in the end."
While the result was disappointing, it was yet another goal for Berahino who is up to six in the league already this season.
"I felt like today I was focused and when that chance came I backed myself to take it and I was happy it went in today," he said.
"I'm just enjoying my football, letting my football do the talking. If the goals keep coming that's great that I'm contributing to the team."
Despite their disappointment at conceding late on, Craig Dawson said West Brom would be able to take the positives out of the performance.
"It was a great team performance," he said. "It was very difficult. They are a great side with great players. The team played very well and we need to take that to the next game.
"We can take positives from it and move on to the weekend."
Louis van Gaal claimed it was United's best performance of the season to date and said he was confident that his players now understood their roles in the team.
"I'm very disappointed because we played our best match of the season and the result is not good enough," he said.
"I think we could have won but that doesn't count in our world so that's why I'm disappointed, but I also have to be happy because we created a lot of chances and only two shots from West Bromwich Albion turned into goals.
"We gave it away because of our individual errors and that's a pity..."
"I've seen on the training ground now that we are better, the players understand the formation more and I've seen it today which is why it's such a pity we didn't get the result we deserved."
Van Gaal brought on Fellaini to replace Ander Herrera at half-time, but said he made the decision after only a few minutes of the match.
"Herrera has played a normal game, not very good but normal, but we have to look also for physical talents and maybe that's our problem," he said.
"I'm a coach who is always thinking about creative players but in England you also need physical bodies in your team and Fellaini is one of these."
But while he pointed to progress tactically, Van Gaal admitted his team's return of 12 points from eight matches was not good enough.
"It's not too good I believe because I think when we see the games normally we are the better team," he said. "When you have 12 points out of eight in my opinion it is eight points too few."
