From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester United have agreed a new contract with England Under-21 striker Danny Welbeck tieing him to the club until at least June 2013.

Welbeck partnered hat-trick hero Michael Owen in the 3-1 midweek Champions League win over Wolfsburg.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website: "We are delighted. We see Danny as one of the great young players who has emerged from the academy.

"He will have a terrific career and we are glad that he has placed his trust in us with his future."

Welbeck said: "I am really happy, there was never a doubt that this is where I want to be.

"I am enjoying every minute and learning so much from all the great players that are here. I would like to thank Sir Alex, the club and the fans for all their support."
