Rooney's career with United has been full of triumph and disaster, success and failure but he has certainly cemented his place among the club's elite.
He will also go down as a true Premier League great and here we look at the career defining moments from each of his 10 seasons as a Red Devil.
2004/05
Rooney arrived at Old Trafford with a bang, scoring a superb hat-trick on his debut as United swept aside Fenerbache 6-2 in the Champions League. With two devastating finishes and deliciously curled free-kick, he had the dream start to life at his new club.
2005/06
As a precocious but hot-headed 19-year-old, Rooney sees red against Villarreal after reacting to a booking by sarcastically clapping in the face of referee Kim Milton Nielsen. His season ends well though as he wins the PFA Young-Player-of-the-Year award for second successive year.
2006/07
Rooney’s 14 league goals help United win the Premier League, his first title at the club. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side finish six points clear of Chelsea and Rooney claims the Goal-of-the-Season award for his stunner against Bolton.
2007/08
In the first ever all-English Champions League final, Rooney’s United beat Chelsea on penalties to claim Europe’s most illustrious prize. On the rout to the final, Rooney scores four times including a vital away goal against Roma in the quarter-finals.
2008/09
In a typically awe-inspiring United comeback, Rooney plays a vital role in overcoming a two goal deficit to beat Tottenham 5-2 in the league. Rooney scores twice, claims to assists and wins the penalty for Untied’s first in a brilliant display. He says after the game: “What a game! To win 5-2 from losing 2-0 is pure class!”
2009/10
Rooney’s 26 goals in 32 league games earns him a host of awards. He claims the PFA and FWA Player-of-the-Year awards and lifts the League Cup. During the season, Rooney also bags his 100th Premier League goal despite still being just 23-years-old.
2010/11
After expressing his desire to leave Old Trafford, Rooney preforms a dramatic U-turn and decides to sign a new deal with the Red Devils. In a mixed season, Rooney produces one of the best goals the Premier League has ever seen. His over-head kick against Man City will go down as one of the greatest goal ever scored.
2011/12
Even though Rooney has the best scoring season of his career, United only win the Community Shield. Rooney scores 27 league goals as well as five in the Champions League and is named in the PFA Team-of-the-Year for the third time in his career. Rooney marks his 350th game for United by scoring twice to beat bitter rivals Liverpool 2-1.
2012/13
After again asking for a transfer during the summer, a seemingly unsettled Rooney has his joint-worse scoring season in all competitions. Despite his quiet year, United still win the Premier League title in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year with the club.
2013/14
Rooney signs a mega new contract deal that ties him to the club until 2019 after another summer of flirting with a move to Chelsea. Rooney scores 17 league goals as United finish an awful seventh after David Moyes’ disastrous spell in charge.
2014/15
After Nemanja Vidic announces his departure from the club there is an opening in the captaincy. New boss Louis van Gaal duly gives Rooney the armband.
