From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Aston Villa midfielder Steven Davis has been offered a new contract which would more than double his pay, even though he still has three and a half years left on his current deal.
Davis has made a massive impact since breaking into the first team 12 months ago and has also become a Northern Ireland international. The 20-year-old is already attracting interest from the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal, who are trying to replace Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira respectively.
But the Villa chairman, Doug Ellis, is determined to hang on to Davis and has therefore made the new offer. Ellis said: "Steven has been offered an excellent contract. I wouldn't divulge what he is on now but it is more than double that.
"I've told him that I know I can look after him as long as he continues to play well. We are doing all we can to keep him. I would say that he is going nowhere, but that would make it seem as if I was issuing a challenge and that is not the case."
Ellis has confirmed that Villa will be looking only for loan signings during the January transfer window.
The Aston Villa striker Kevin Phillips has said that keyhole surgery on an ankle injury, which he underwent on Tuesday, has gone well: "The surgeon has removed a small piece of floating bone that was causing some discomfort, but he's pleased with the result and now it's just a matter of time.
"It's too early to say how long I'll be out for but, needless to say, I want to get back into the swing of things as soon as possible."
