Wayne Rooney sparked an injury scare yesterday when he limped out of training with Manchester United, making it unlikely the striker will feature in tomorrow’s home game with Sunderland.

Rooney was immediately sent for a scan to assess the damage and it is unclear whether the problem is linked to the foot injury that forced him to have a painkilling injection to play against Bayern Munich last month.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s manager, Arsène Wenger, has admitted it is “very difficult” to say when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be back in action. The 20-year-old missed Arsenal’s 3-0 home win over Newcastle on Monday because of a groin problem. “Alex is in treatment at the moment and not in training. It is very difficult to give you a timescale on him at the moment,” Wenger said.
