Manchester United are believed to be ready to reward defender Tyler Blackett with a new contract – worth a ridiculous £50,000-a-week.

Despite only making his United debut in their season opening defeat to Swansea, Blackett looks set to see his current contract of £2,000-a-week increased by a staggering 2,400 per cent.

Since making his debut in August, Blackett has made six Premier League appearances. United have kept just two clean sheets with Blackett in the side, and he’s also picked up two yellow cards as well as a red card in the incredible 5-3 defeat to Leicester.

As things stand, Blackett features in a team that pays the likes of Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria astronomical wages, and the 20-year-old earns three times less in a year than the pair are paid in a week.

But that looks likely to change as the Daily Mail report that the centre-back has impressed manager Louis van Gaal enough to warrant a new contract, and that he should be rewarded for his standing in the first team with a pay packet that reflects his current position.

That said, Blackett would probably not have featured this season at all had an injury crisis not hit United’s defence. As things stand, Van Gaal is unable to call on Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling, while another academy product in Paddy McNair has picked up an injury that will keep him out for at least three weeks,

Blackett partnered Marcus Rojo at the back in United’s 2-1 win over Everton last weekend, and he will likely retain his place for their next game against West Brom on 20 October once the Premier League resumes after the international break.
