Pepe Reina, the Liverpool goalkeeper, is expected to join Napoli on a season-long loan deal in a bid to stay in contention for Spain’s World Cup squad.

The 30-year-old faces fierce competition for his place at Anfield following the £9 million signing of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland and has been offered the chance to link-up with Rafael Benitez, his former Liverpool manager, who is the new Napoli coach.

Reina was in Spain’s squad for the Confederations Cup but needs to be playing regularly at the highest level to stay ahead of David De Gea, the Manchester United goalkeeper, in the pecking order.

Mignolet started for Liverpool in front of 50,000 fans in Jakarta yesterday when goals from Raheem Sterling and Countinho handed Brendan Rodgers’s side a 2-0 win against Indonesia XI.

Manchester United are also on tour and they secured a 5-1 win against the A League All Stars in Sydney yesterday to give David Moyes his first win as manager. Jesse Lingard and Danny Welbeck scored two goals each before Robin van Perise completed the rout.

Andre Santos, Arsenal’s Brazilian left-back, has been released by the London club and has returned home to join Flamengo. The 30-year-old, who was signed for £6.8 million from Fenerbahce in August 2011 but sent out on loan to Gremio in January, has reportedly agreed a two-year deal with the Rio de Janeiro-based club.

Kevin Phillips, the former England striker who turns 40 next week, has signed a one-year contract to play for Crystal Palace next season. Phillips, who scored seven goals in 16 appearances while on loan at Palace from Blackpool last season, will become the third outfield player to appear in the Premier League aged 40, after Gordon Strachan and Teddy Sheringham.
