The home team were incredibly defensive from the outset and Thomas Tuchel's new side dominated possession, getting plenty of space and dangerous build-up play down the flanks - though not many clear openings or shots.
A silly foul from Eric Dier on Timo Werner gifted Chelsea a penalty, which Jorginho tucked away neatly - though the Blues then lost key defender Thiago Silva to injury.

Spurs improved after the break but it was still Chelsea who threatened the next goal, with Timo Werner denied by a Serge Aurier block and Hugo Lloris saving from Mason Mount. Chelsea had further chances to increase their lead but settled for the single goal and three points.
Here are the player ratings from Thursday night's game.
Tottenham
Hugo Lloris - 8. Reacted well to a couple of dangerous moments - especially passes from his own team-mates. One great low save from Mount.
Serge Aurier - 7. Arguably the best of Spurs' defensive quartet. Brave in the block and some good tackles.
Toby Alderweireld - 6. Not at his best of late and had no movement ahead of him to play his trademark passes from deep.
Eric Dier - 4. Very clumsy challenge to give away the penalty. An awful back-pass almost gave away another goal.
Ben Davies - 5. Really struggled against Chelsea's twin right-sided threat.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - 6. Overrun entirely for most of the match. Worked hard but committed fouls more than protected the defence.
Moussa Sissoko - 5. Missing his usual work rate and ball-winning ability.
Tanguy Ndombele - 4. Offered nothing in either half of the pitch in a very poor performance.
Steven Bergwijn - 5. Did his usual running down the flank to double up with the full-back but never offered a counter-attacking outlet.
Son Heung-min - 5. A couple of individual dribbles aside, he was marginalised entirely by Spurs' negative approach.
Carlos Vinicius - 5. Isolated, not influential and frustrated.
Chelsea
Edouard Mendy - 7. One or two nervy moments in possession but largely untested. Good save from Lamela.
Cesar Azpilicueta - 7. Cool in possession and defended well throughout.
Thiago Silva - 6. Had no defending to do at all before going off injured late in the first half.
Antonio Rudiger - 7. Didn't have too much to do for much of the game but showed good intent to carry the ball into space.
Reece James - 7. Not as relentless with his running into space high upfield as might be expected, but good link play and a few important challenges.
Jorginho - 7. Always controlled with his play and a well-taken penalty.
Mateo Kovacic - 8. Like Jorginho, helped control the match from the centre. Was a constant line-breaker for Chelsea with his ability to turn and surge forward into space.
Marcos Alonso - 6. A relatively quiet outing down the left. Skewed one shot over.
Mason Mount - 8. Played a central role behind the split forwards. Industrious, clever and tested the keeper more than once.
Callum Hudson-Odoi - 7. The early threat for the away team. Lots of runs down the right channel, some good crossing and one effort on goal.
Timo Werner - 7. Full of running and work rate, opened up the gaps at times and had one or two chances to score himself.
