Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has criticised the Premier League over the lack of clarity surrounding his team’s fixture on Wednesday evening.

Spurs were due to host Fulham at 6pm and, as of 2pm, there was still no confirmation as to whether the match would go ahead - leading the manager to post a tongue-in-cheek comment about the “best league in the world” on Instagram.

UPDATE: Spurs vs. Fulham called off after rise in Covid-19 cases

A rise in coronavirus cases among top-flight players and staff saw a record number of positives returned this week, with Sheffield United one of the latest to confirm that they have had multiple positives.

It has led to calls for a ‘circuit-breaker’ from Sam Allardyce, following the postponement of Everton’s match against Manchester City.

Now on Wednesday, Fulham were awaiting further results from the latest round of tests as they felt it could impact the decision on whether the game was played or not - and Mourinho was not happy with the timing.

Taking to social media, the Portuguese boss posted a video showing the Spurs staff and players in their closed environment setting, waiting for kick-off time to approach - yet not knowing if they’ll actually be playing or not.

However, it was confirmed a short while later that the game was indeed postponed.

That was of little comfort to Mourinho who was clearly irked by the delay in confirmation, saying: "Match at 6 pm... We still don’t know if we play. Best league in the world."

Tottenham are seventh in the table and a win on Wednesday night could have taken them up into third, such is the congested nature at the top.

Fulham, meanwhile, would have been hoping to climb out of the bottom three with three points of their own - but both will now have to wait and fit in the game at a later date.

The later game on Wednesday night sees Newcastle host Liverpool in a match which at present still appears to be going ahead.
