Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised Harry Kane for his ability to win free-kicks and penalties, hailing the Tottenham striker as the most ‘street-wise’ player in the Premier League.

Kane has come under criticism in recent weeks, with many observers accusing the England captain of employing dangerous tactics by backing into opposition players during aerial battles in an attempt to draw fouls.

But Carragher suggested Kane’s approach is a clever one, and that it should be praised rather than criticised.

“I spoke about Harry Kane on this show a month ago about this new role and this new No 10,” said Carragher on Sky Sports, referring to Kane’s demonstrations of playmaking prowess this season, which have seen the 27-year-old record seven goals and nine assists in the top flight.

“Harry Kane is the most street-wise footballer in the Premier League by a long way, and I love it. I absolutely love it.

“And if anyone after this piece tells me he is cheating or going down, it’s not.

“It is a big part of the game and a really clever part of the game.”

Kane put in a superb performance as Tottenham defeated Manchester City 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday to go top of the table, terrorising the visitors’ defenders throughout.

Son Heung-min struck early on Saturday and substitute Giovani Lo Celso added Spurs’ second in the 65th minute – from a Kane assist.

“He made Man City’s defenders look really childish and naive, not understanding football,” Carragher said of Kane.

Tottenham host Ludogorets in the Europa League on Thursday before facing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho’s side are atop the Premier League standings on 20 points, ahead of second-placed champions Liverpool on goal difference and two points clear of the third-placed Blues.
