Harry Kane has admitted that Tottenham need to find a way to consistently win matches when the pressure is on before they can hope to end the club’s long trophy drought.

A 1-1 draw with Arsenal saw Spurs preserve a four point lead over their north London rivals and avoid losing three consecutive Premier League matches for the first time under Mauricio Pochettino.

It has been a difficult week for the club, with defeats to both Burnley and Chelsea effectively ending their slim title hopes, and Kane has said that those losses show how this Spurs team still have some way to go before they can hope to win a Premier League title.

“The thing for us now is — like this week — when the pressure is on we need to find a way to step up and get it done,” Kane said.

“We haven’t done that in recent years, and we haven’t done that this week, and that has got to be the difference. That is the turning point we have to achieve.”

Last week, Pochettino raised eyebrows when he confessed it might take “five years’ work, or ten years’ work” for Tottenham to be in a position where the club can hope to win the title. When asked about that remark, Kane said he understood what his manager meant but hoped Spurs could deliver such success sooner.

“I don’t think it’s far away but I think what the gaffer was saying was that with the teams these days there is no guarantee you will win, even if you improve,” Kane explained. “All the teams are improving, strengthening, getting better year by year, so it’s important for us that we don’t fall behind that.

“We’ve got to a stage in the last four, five years here we’ve done more than we expected as a club but that means we have to do even more to reach the next stop. Whether it’s five years or not I can’t say, but I hope it’s sooner.”

Tottenham now turn their attentions back to the Champions League, with the squad flying to Dortmund today ahead of the second leg of their round of 16 tie, which they lead 3-0.

“Beating Dortmund would show we’re growing in Europe and becoming a bigger team,” Kane added. “It’s important we get to the quarter-final after reaching this stage last year."
