Toby Alderweireld has said he is still waiting for a new contract offer from Tottenham but believes he will be at the north London club next season.

The defender, who joined from Atletico Madrid in 2015, is currently on a four-year contract at Tottenham but talks over a new deal continue to remain on hold.

In particular, reports have suggested that Alderweireld is seeking pay parity with Harry Kane, whose current contract is worth up to £110,000, though the club’s reluctance to pay players in excess of £100,000 a week is proving problematic.

The delay in signing a new contract has subsequently prompted speculation that the centre-back could leave this summer, with Inter Milan touted as potential bidders.

Nonetheless, Alderweireld has said he sees his future at Tottenham and is awaiting a “contract proposal”.

“I’m still waiting for a contract proposal,” he told Belgian reporters while on international duty with Belgium. “But in my mind I’m playing for Spurs next season.”

He also dismissed reports that he had snubbed an offer from the club. "There is no talk now, so it's all rumours, because if there's no talk there's no rejection as well. We will see in the future how it will go."

Alderweireld has played a crucial role in Tottenham’s transformation into Premier League title-challengers across the past two seasons, thriving in the backline alongside fellow compatriot Jan Vertonghen.

He made 39 appearances for Tottenham last season, scoring two goals, as the club finished runners-up to Chelsea.
