From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Germany captain, Michael Ballack, believes this summer will be his "last chance to play abroad" after revealing that he is in talks with Chelsea.
The 29-year-old midfielder will leave Bayern Munich when his contract expires in the summer. He has rejected the club's offer of a new contract and has long been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. After confirming he is in "serious negotiations" with Chelsea, he said: "I have always wanted to play abroad. At 29, this is my last chance.
"I am in serious negotiations. Nothing is signed as yet but I know what I want."
Ballack said he had spoken to the Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho. Ballack added: "We've talked. You can assume that I had a good feeling during that conversation."
The Chelsea chief executive, Peter Kenyon, said last night: "He is an outstanding player. We are in good negotiations [and] I am delighted where we are."
