Saints have based their good start to the Premier League season on their sturdy defence, but that was blown apart after Artur Boruc watched Begovic’s strike bounce over his head and into the gaping net.
With the goal, Begovic becomes just the fifth goalkeeper to score in the Premier League after Peter Schmeichel, Brad Friedel, Paul Robinson and Tim Howard. He also becomes Stoke’s joint top scorer in the league this season, with the Potters yet to see a player score twice this season.
A tweet sent out on the official Stoke Twitter account confirmed that the wind was having a major effect on the game at the Brittania Stadium, but that will not make Boruc feel any better about conceding the goal.
Erik Pieters layed the ball back to Begovic, who’s kick deceived Boruc to register just the fifth quickest goal in Premier League history with the distance registered at 100-yards.
However, his ecstasy quickly turned sour after Jay Rodriguez equalised for Southampton with a close-range header that ironically looped over Begovic to make the score 1-1.
