Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Stoke City go into Monday night’s fixture in good spirits after knocking last season’s finalists Sunderland out of the League Cup on Tuesday night through defender Marc Muniesa’s unlikely brace at the Stadium of Light.
However, Mark Hughes’ Potters came away from Loftus Road deflated last Saturday in the Premier League after a last-gasp free-kick from Niko Kranjcar salvaged a 2-2 for Queens Park Rangers, denying Stoke only their second league victory of the season as they slipped to 13.
Meanwhile Newcastle United finally gave their fans something to cheer about on Wednesday night after coming from behind to defeat Crystal Palace 3-2 in the League Cup thanks to Paul Dummett’s extra-time winner.
The welcome distraction was vital as Alan Pardew’s men have plummeted to rock-bottom in the Premier League after failing to register a win so far this season, with Papiss Cisse’s late brace saving the Magpies’ blushes after scuppering a 2-2 draw at home to Hull City, otherwise leading to a third defeat in five games for struggling Newcastle.

CLASSIC MOMENT/MATCH
Newcastle United remained just two points outside the top-four in the Premier League after thrashing Stoke City 5-1 on Boxing Day only last year.
Liverpool loanee Oussama Assaidi gave the Potters the lead on the half-hour mark before Loic Remy equalised for the Magpies on the stroke of half-time.
But it was Newcastle’s second-half display that had manager Alan Pardew purring after further strikes from Yoan Gouffran, Yohan Cabaye, Papiss Cisse and Remy’s second of the afternoon completed a rout at St James’ Park to keep themselves two points above Premier League champions Manchester United.
