Spectator is arrested after row with Wright

A man was arrested last night after allegedly racially abusing Ian Wright during Manchester City's 3-0 Carling Cup victory over Queen's Park Rangers at Loftus Road. The former England international left the stadium after the incident and following interviews carried out by the police.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A man in his 40s was arrested in connection with an allegation of racial abuse." He was bailed to appear for questioning on 25 November.

David Davies, the chief executive of Queen's Park Rangers, confirmed that a second man was arrested after another incident, which is also alleged to have included racial abuse ­ this time of a steward. The atmosphere at the ground turned ugly after Shaun Wright-Phillips, Wright's adoptive son, scored the first of his two goals, with fans complaining that he was offside. Wright was sitting in the directors' box at the time and celebrated the goal. The fan was sitting in front of him, in a different area.

Davies said he was alerted to the incident and asked Wright to move away from it. He said: "Ian and a series of witnesses gave statements to the police [at half-time]."

He added: "Ian was given his ticket by Ian Holloway [the QPR manager], which he was perfectly entitled to."
