Southampton have agreed a deal with Vitesse Arnhem to sign defender Alexander Buttner, the Dutch club have announced.

The 23-year-old has been regularly linked with a move away from the Eredivisie club this summer, with Fulham, QPR and Werder Bremen amongst those reportedly interested.

However, Buttner expressed his desire to join Southampton this week and Vitesse have today revealed a deal has been agreed.

"Vitesse and Southampton have agreed the transition of Alexander Buttner to the Saints," the club posted on their official website, http://www.vitesse.nl.

"The left-back goes as soon as possible to the Premier League club for a medical examination.

"Both clubs spent the last few days discussing the transfer of the 23-year-old defender.

"Vitesse, on Friday, accepted an improved offer from the English Premier League club.

"This sees Alexander Buttner depart immediately to Southampton."

Buttner, who can also operate at right-back, came through the youth system at Vitesse.

The Doetinchem-born player made 107 appearances for the Dutch club after making his debut during the 2007/08 season, scoring 10 goals in the process.

Buttner particularly impressed last season and was named in Holland's provisional 36-man squad for Euro 2012.

The defender did not make the final cut but will be buoyed by the fact he now looks set to get the move to Southampton he wanted.

"It would be a very big disappointment if this did not happen," Buttner said of his protracted move, speaking to De Telegraaf this week.

"I'm in Southampton and everything is perfect. The club, the stadium and the reception really surprised me. Beautiful.

"And Southampton's ambitions - with the new investor they want to be chasing Manchester City."

Southampton would not comment on Vitesse's statement when contacted by Press Association Sport.
