Shearer and Bellamy ensure PSV return for Robson

"It's quite ironic and sometimes it's very nice how football throws up these equations," Robson said. "I spent three years of my managerial life at PSV. They were happy years, great years. I've got fond memories. I just hope we can knock them out."

Newcastle's progress came on the back of the announcement yesterday that Robson, has signed a new contract and will remain in charge until the end of the 2004-05 season.

Bellamy, who was involved in an airport altercation with the coach John Carver as the team flew out to Palma, scored seconds after being introduced as a 77th-minute substitute.

Alan Shearer, had put the visitors ahead in the 46th minute, and the captain added a third at the death to clinch a 7-1 aggregate victory.

Newcastle knew that an early goal would all but end the Spanish side's hopes. When Shearer was fouled by Federico Lussenhoff 40 yards out with less than a minute gone, Laurent Robert, who had sent a long-range free-kick past the Mallorca goalkeeper, Leo Franco, at St James' Park in the first leg, again went for goal but Franco's replacement, Miki Garro, managed to beat his swerving effort away.

Newcastle had an escape five minutes before the break when the substitute Alejandro Campano beat the offside trap and crossed towards Anderson Nene. Although Andy O'Brien did enough to put him off in front of goal, Toni Gonzalez followed up only to hit his shot wide.

Newcastle's task became a lot easier within 37 seconds of the start of the second half. Miki's mishit clearance fell to Shearer 30 yards out, and he sent it back into the empty net for his 23rd goal of the season.

Bellamy was introduced with 13 minutes left and he sprinted on to Hugo Viana's clearance straightaway to outstrip a square defence and lift an exquisite shot over Miki.

It was left to Shearer to finish off the tie with a minute remaining. Olivier Bernard carved the dispirited Spaniards apart and the 33-year-old nonchalantly tapped home his second of the night.

"In the second half, I think we showed a bit more grit," Robson said. "I think we played the first half like a practice match and we nearly let them into it, to be honest. But in the second half, once we scored the first goal, it was obviously that much more easy."
