Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Belgian, bought for £32.5million from Aston Villa, scored a stunning volley in a pre-season friendly against Swindon Town on Sunday, with the powerful striker looking impressive alongside fellow new signing Roberto Firmino.
Bookmakers BoyleSports have seen a flurry of bets off the back of the goal, with Benteke now among the favourites to be crowned top scorer in 2015-16.
The 24-year-old, who scored 13 goals in the Premier League last season, is now available at 16/1, joint-sixth favourite with Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud.
It's a familiar name at the top of the favourites list, with last season's top scorer Sergio Aguero the 11/4 favourite. The Argentinian scored 26 goals last term and has an unbelievable tally of 78 goals in just 120 Premier League matches; should he stay fit Manchester City could well be title favourites.
Another striker who will be hoping to stay fit for the full season is Chelsea's Diego Costa, the second favourite. He was the Premier League's form player in the first half of last season before being slowed by his hamstrings.
The Spaniard scored 20 Premier League goals overall, but only three of those came after 17 January - he missed the Community Shield defeat and could miss the opener against Swansea.
A pair of Englishmen are third and fourth on the list, with Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney just in front of breakout Tottenham star Harry Kane.
Rooney spent a lot of time in midfield last season but is likely to spend the majority of this campaign as the main striker, while Kane will be hoping that his 21 goals last season were not just the result of a remarkable purple patch.
Alexis Sanchez, who scored 16 goals in a great debut season, is fifth, while the likes of Daniel Sturridge and new Manchester United signing Memphis Depay sneak into the top 10.
Radamel Falcao, who struggled mightily at Old Trafford last season, seems an optimistic outside bet at 20/1.
Premier League top goalscorer odds:
