Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

David Batty's hopes of returning from a year-long lay-off this season have suffered another setback. The Leeds midfielder had been due to play in Tuesday's reserve match with Manchester City, but a back injury which had resulted in his late withdrawal from the squad for last Saturday's 6-1 win over Charlton again ruled him out.

It is now almost 12 months since Batty played for the first team. Leeds, who still need to secure themselves against the danger of relegation from the Premiership, have six league games left. Although the 34-year-old former England international has the full support of the club's caretaker manager, Peter Reid, he may not get a look in.

"He's had a back injury because of the hard pitches," said Reid. "It's unfortunate. Although he is pushing himself, he keeps getting injuries. I'm going to be having a chat with him. He is desperate and he is working really hard.

"It's a frustrating time for the lad, but if he keeps getting slight injuries, there is nothing we can do about it. We've just got to get him as fit as possible, as soon as possible. But it doesn't take an Einstein to see that games are running out."
