The win moved the Magpies off the bottom of the table, but the pressure on Alan Pardew to ensure the victory commences a purple patch remains fierce.
Calls for Pardew’s sacking have come in a variety of forms, including banners, leaflets, on social media and even a website – but despite their disappointing start, a win for Newcastle will put Pardew’s side just one point behind Tottenham, winners of just one of their last six league games.
Mauricio Pochettino is attempting to juggle a European adventure with the demands of Premier League football – this game comes three days after Spurs’ Europa League clash with Asteras Tripolis – but never will that be accepted as an excuse for poor form. One worry for Pochettino will stem from the fact that Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado have scored just one goal between them this campaign.
