Premier League flops of the week - Wayne Rooney, Francis Coquelin and John Terry all make our XI failures this weekend

Two weekends in and the Premier League is already in full-flow with crises hitting clubs at the top and bottom. Champions Chelsea were humbled at the Ethiad by a rampant Manchester City while Sunderland put in a lifeless performance at home against Norwich.

We’ve cast our eye over the weekend's results and compiled a team of flops - watch below.

Goalkeeper – Costel Pantilimon (Sunderland)

The former Man City goalkeeper should have done better for the first and third goals. With the team looking shaky, he will have to be a rock if Sunderland stay up this season.

Right Back – Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea)

The usually solid right-back was made to dance to Raheem Sterling and Aleksandar Kolarov’s merry tune all afternoon. At fault for the second and third goals – he will want to quickly move on.

Centre Back – John Terry (Chelsea)

John Terry was subbed at half-time in the fear that he could not handle Sergio Aguero. Jose Mourinho’s lack of faith in his captain puts him in our team of flops.

Centre Back – Younes Kaboul (Sunderland)

An experienced defender like Younes Kaboul should not be making the mistakes he did against Norwich. Disinterested and disillusioned from the centre back; he needs to improve if Sunderland are going to stay in the Premier League.

Left Back – Patrick van Aanholt (Sunderland)

After a dismal performance against Leicester on the opening day; the left back had an equally tough time against Norwich. He failed to deal with the pressure as Norwich exploited the right wing over and over again.

Defensive Midfield - Francis Coquelin (Arsenal)

The midfield enforcer could have received a second booking on several occasions and was very lucky to not be sent off. It would have put his team under great pressure at a booming Selhurst Park.

Central Midfield – Lee Cattermole (Sunderland)

The midfielder went missing and his mistakes led to two Norwich goals. Could not keep up with the pace of the game; needs to get on the training field or should be dropped.

Central Midfield – Nadir Bentaleb (Tottenham)

The young player replaced the energetic Ryan Mason when Spurs were leading 2-0; but he failed to offer any defensive protection as Stoke made a brilliant comeback. Will he ever deliver on his potential?

Right Wing – Erik Lamela (Tottenham)

The record Spurs signing replaced Harry Kane after the hour mark against Stoke and made no impact. The market may be inflated but £30m ought to buy you more than that.

Left Wing – Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

Last year’s PFA Player of the Year, Eden Hazard, failed to live up to the occasion against Manchester City. If he is to become one of the top players in the world, the winger will have to take matters into his own hands and win the big games on his own à la Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Striker – Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

The Manchester United captain cut a frustrated figure against Aston Villa as he came deep to influence play. Only touching the ball once inside the opposition’s area, Rooney offered zero goal scoring threat. Louis van Gaal might have to look for a genuine No. 9 as his captain doesn’t look up to scratch.

Manager – Dick Advocaat (Sunderland)

In one of the worst weeks in Jose Mourinho’s managerial career, the Sunderland manager still takes the crown for flop manager of the week. Advocaat appears to be a man without a plan; and after two defeats against similar opposition, we might not see him in the Sunderland hot seat for much longer.
